GB Squad for Euros Announced

The European weightlifting championships are right around the corner and team GB are now selected. This means we get our first look at the athletes who will be representing BWL – and British Weightlifting – on the international stage.

Among these athletes are some of the most experienced British athletes – and some promising newcomers. This includes 3 Olympians in Gareth Evans, Jack Oliver, and Zoe Smith who will be using the Europeans as a landmark for their 2020 journey.

This roster of athletes looks like a clash of worlds between the pedigree of international lifters and a whole host of up and coming talent. Sally Bennett is getting her first international appearance, while many on this list got their first Team GB competition in the last 2 years.

British Women’s team:

  • Hannah Powell -45
  • Kelly-Jo Robson -49
  • Amy Williams -55
  • Olivia Blatch -59
  • Zoe Smith -64
  • Sarah Davies -64
  • Emily Godley -71
  • Sally Bennett -71
  • Mercy Brown -87
  • Emily Campbell 87+

British Men’s team:

  • Haroon Siraj -67
  • Gareth Evans -67
  • Chris Murray -81
  • Jack Oliver -81
  • Edmon Avetisyan -96
  • Owen Boxall -102

We’re seeing a solid stable of talent developing in line with the popularity of the sport – a trend we’re likely to see continue as these athletes reach athletic maturity. This bodes exceptionally well for team GB, with our youth and junior competitors advancing into international representatives.

The Europeans are both the biggest competition of many of these athlete’s careers so far, as well as a stepping stone to world-level competition. While the veterans on this list like Oliver and Evans are adding more feathers to their cap, we’re excited to see the first signs of the future of British Weightlifting.

We look at this as a chance to demonstrate the increasing strength and depth of British talent – and a sign of things to come!
