[VIDEO] The Mountain -- Thor Bjornsson benches 245kg two weeks out from powerlifting meet
World’s Strongest Man title holder Hafthor Julius ’Thor’ Bjornsson has benched a bar bending 245kg (539lbs) just 2 weeks out from his first powerlifting meet.
The strongman set the internet alight with speculation earlier this month when he announced that he would be competing in a full powerlifting meet for the first time. The meet -- dubbed Thor’s Powerlifting Challenge -- is set for December 15 in Reykjavík, Iceland.
The Mountain’s 245kg bench press
The announcement generated lots of buzz about what sort of numbers the huge man will hit at the meet. Thor currently holds the world record for deadlift using an elephant bar, lifting 472 kg at the 2018 Arnold Strongman Classic, and he’s publicly stated that he thinks he can take Eddie Hall’s 500kg deadlift world record one day.
We’ve also seen him squat a massive 440kg recently. But unlike squat and deadlift, bench pressing is rarely seen in strongman, making this the first time we’ve seen Bjornsson max out on bench.
While Thor’s unlikely to have the biggest bench at the competition -- that honour will probably go to bench press world record holder Kiril Sarychev -- 245kg is still a world class lift.
If he can beat that number on the day, and live up to his reputation on squats and deadlifts, we’ll be in for something special.
